This will probably be one of the few times I'll use this category, art, in this blog. I'm a big fan of Syd Mead though, so I couldn't let it go by without posting about it.
I got this through Tron 2.0 News. A documentary called "Visual Futurist: The art & life of Syd Mead" is coming out soon. You can see a preview of it at the link. It also has some useful links for finding more information about it. It will premier at a film festival in late July. I don't know when it will come out where us mortals can see it.
For those who don't know, Syd Mead is a visual designer, but he dreams of the future. I came to know his work through science-fiction films, like Tron, Blade Runner, and 2010 (based on the book by Arthur C. Clarke). Tron and Blade Runner are two of my all-time favorite sci-fi films. His style is visually futuristic and captivating, at least for a technologist like myself. A film I count as an inspiration for me to enter the field of software development is Tron, which was released in 1982. Syd Mead was not the only visual artist who worked on the film, but his designs appeared throughout it. Another visual artist who really made his mark on it was Jean Giraud "Moebius", who is apparently best known for his work in comic books.
Anyway, if I hear anymore news about this documentary, I'll post here.
Incidentally, some years back I heard about a feature film that Giraud was working on, called "Thru the Moebius Strip", an animated adventure. Apparently it has been released, though it sounds like it's only appeared at film festivals. I've checked around and I can't find it anywhere in the U.S.
